Course objectives

The curriculum covers fundamental concepts related to the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations, major metallurgical processes, alloys, and their mechanical properties. Additionally, it addresses the sustainability of metal production and usage, including green production methods, recycling, and scrap treatment.

These concepts are applied through detailed examinations of various types of alloys, including steels, light alloys, superalloys, and new metallic materials.

Results of learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

  • Gain a thorough understanding of phase diagrams and phase transformation models in metals and alloys.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

  • Develop the ability to analyze and design different microstructures tailored to specific desired properties.
  • Acquire practical skills in the application of industrial metallic materials, considering factors like composition, heat treatments, and mechanical properties.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT

  • Assess the implications of various material properties and processing techniques in the context of desired outcomes and sustainability.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

  • Effectively communicate the rationale behind materials design and treatment decisions, explaining how these decisions impact the performance and sustainability of metallic materials.

LEARNING SKILLS

  • Build foundational knowledge that enables further study and keeps up with innovations in the field of metallurgy, particularly in sustainable practices.

Program

  • Theory of phase transformations in metals and alloys. Diffusive and non-diffusive transformations : thermodynamics, kinetics, crystallography, obtaining microstructures.
  • Solidification.
  • Advanced mechanical properties of metals: fracture, strenghtening mechanisms, fatigue, creep.
  • Ferrous alloys: complex steels.
  • Non-ferrous alloys. Light alloys (Al, Mg, Ti). Alloys for high temperature applications. Special alloys.
  • Additive manufacturing.
  • Environmental impact of metals and challenges for a green metallurgy. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in production processes. Recycling, life cycle analysis, scraps treatment.

Learning assessment methods

The written exam, conducted in person and lasting for 2 hours, consists of three open-ended questions that focus on the topics discussed during the lectures. These questions are designed to assess the depth and accuracy of the students' understanding. More detailed and accurate responses will result in a higher evaluation score.

The grading for the exam is on a scale from 0 to 30.
